Freezing Ground and Excavation Challenges

CONSTRUCTION DAIRIES

This is something I never thought would be a challenge. And it's not a harmful one, but it's kind of a time-consuming process when it comes to trenching/excavation. Even the monster in the room is struggling to work around the frozen ground.

What would be the solution?

Make sure you schedule trenching and excavation before the winter gets too wintry. Basically when the temperature is in positive or atleast lower then -5 deg cel.. Early scheduling won't work all the time, it depends when you get your building permits for the construction. But still, things can be planned from the start and targeting excavation before the start of November would be a great plan. Basically, completing the foundation work before November or the first snow hits. Because of the snowy Canadian weather, 20% of the time goes in snow ploughing and removal and dumping to an off site location or making space for it at the site eventually taking a large space of active site.

One more thing to add in it. The frost may be 4 ft deep or 6 inch deep which makes it difficult digging the 4ft and easier digging the 6 inch. And if the frost is just shallow then my boy you are in luck. The time would be on your side. The point is at every step you learn so much and then you recalibrate your plan but not working around. One thing one needs to make sure that the system is followed.

What do we take from here?

The major concern is not breaking the ground. It's saving your client's few extra bucks and time. But still it depends all on the initiation of the project and approvals from the City no one can predict the time taken for bureaucracy. They give you a timeline of approval but you never know what welcomes the delay.
